Renowned pianist Lang Lang is set to return to Abu Dhabi on November 22, bringing his globally celebrated talent back to a city he’s grown deeply fond of over the years.

With a captivating lineup of Disney classics, reimagined through his masterful piano interpretations, Lang Lang is ready to enchant audiences of all ages.

In a lively and insightful conversation, he opened up about his love for Abu Dhabi, his unique Disney project, and his vision for music education in the Middle East.

“Abu Dhabi is such a special place,” Lang Lang shared. “It’s a city that treasures its roots but is open to new cultural experiences. Unlike some of the more commercialised cities, it still holds onto that human touch, which I really love.”

Reflecting on his first performance here with the Vienna Philharmonic in 2009, he’s witnessed Abu Dhabi’s transformation into a global cultural hub over the past 15 years.

“It’s amazing how fast it’s developed, yet it’s managed to keep that cultural soul intact. It’s not just a place for big buildings; it has substance,” he added, emphasizing Abu Dhabi’s harmonious blend of modernity and tradition.

The upcoming concert promises to be unlike any other, filled with some of Disney’s most cherished songs from Frozen to Encanto, and even timeless classics like Three Little Pigs. Lang Lang explained the inspiration behind this unique programme.

“I’ve taken all of my favourite Disney songs and arranged them for the piano in a way that keeps their original magic while giving them a classical twist. You’ll hear songs from every Disney generation, so whether it’s a newer song like We Don’t Talk About Bruno or older classics, there’s something for everyone.”

His wife Gina and close friends will also be joining him, making this a true family affair. “We’ve even included pieces that resonate across generations, and I think everyone; young, old, families; will find something they love.”

Lang Lang’s love for music began at an early age, growing up in a musical household with his father, who played traditional Chinese instruments, and a mother who fostered a deep love for music.

“Music was everywhere in our house,” he reminisced. “It was just a natural part of my life, so pursuing it professionally felt genuine to me.” His childhood in a close-knit musical community ingrained a sense of purpose in him that he’s carried into his career, one that’s not only about performing but also about nurturing the next generation of musicians.

His passion for music education has led him to establish the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, which aims to inspire and empower young musicians worldwide. Eager to expand its reach, he has set his sights on the Middle East.

“I’d love to do more in Abu Dhabi and the region. We’ve been talking a lot about launching educational projects here, perhaps even exchange programmes where students from Abu Dhabi could connect with those in China and the U.S.,” he shared.

For Lang Lang, music is a universal language, and he hopes to bridge cultures by exposing young people to the joy of classical music.

“With this Disney project, I’m hoping to open doors for kids who may not have been exposed to classical music yet. It’s a way to bring them into this world through something they already love.”

“The Lang Lang International Music Foundation has been a huge part of my life,” he said. “We’re always looking for ways to engage young people, especially those who may not have access to music education. I’m hoping that in the future, we’ll have a stronger presence in Abu Dhabi.”

As the concert date approaches, it’s clear that Lang Lang’s return to Abu Dhabi is not just another stop on his global tour; it’s a meaningful connection with a city he respects deeply.

With a programme that celebrates both nostalgia and innovation, Lang Lang is poised to deliver an unforgettable evening.

For Abu Dhabi’s music lovers, young and old, it will be a performance that bridges cultures and generations, reaffirming the city’s reputation as a cultural beacon in the Middle East.

And for Lang Lang, it’s another step toward his dream of making music accessible and inspiring for all.
